Time Out NY
Japanese hairstylist Akiko Sugiyama trained at Toni & Guy in London before moving to New York in 2008, working at Lower East Side salons such as Le Salon d’Art and Ringo. She ventures out on her own to open this four-chair balcony space, situated inside artisan bazaar the Market NYC. Despite its unorthodox location, the salon is capable of executing services beyond basic haircuts (women $75, men $55) and blowouts ($40–$55): An enclosed washing station down a flight of stairs allows for color ($85–$200), highlights ($100–$150) and keratin treatments ($220–$350). But the real draw is nail art, performed using Gelish and Gelaxy gel polish by two technicians from Tokyo. A single-color manicure ($35) serves as the ideal base for hand-painted designs such as flowers (add $20), camouflage (add $20), half-moons (add $10) and intricate Aztec prints (add $30). The sky’s the limit when it comes to custom work, but past themed creations include a Galaxy manicure ($50) and one depicting New York icons ($60). Regardless of what you get, you can expect it to last for up to two weeks.
POSTED: FRIDAY NOVEMBER 8 2013
Tucked away in The Market here in NYC, is an adorable nail art place called Akiko Hair & Nail. Last weekend I had the pleasure of getting my nails done at Akiko and loved it! Akiko is unique because they don’t just offer your everyday manicure, but beautiful nail art. I couldn’t go to crazy for work and such, so I kept it more simple with a gold stripe. But the work they can do is amazing! I really love how my nails turned out….
